Water is life!

A glass of water after getting home from a hectic day is sheer bliss. Nothing can quench thirst the way water does. By making 70% composition of our body, water plays a key role in almost physiological activities, from neural control and digestion to removal of waste. Water fuels every important organ of the human body:

  • Brain- 80 %
  • Lungs- 90%
  • Muscles- 75%
  • Skin- 64%
  • Blood- 83%

Although drinking water is the way to live a healthy life, you should be cautious about things like habits and quality when it comes to drinking water. There are certain good habits that enhance the action of water, while some bad habits that may cause some ill effects.

Do’s
Drink water every time you feel thirsty.

An average person feels thirsty after physical activities or meals. Moreover, people living in arid or humid climates often feel thirsty as their body loses a huge amount of water due to sweating. Drinking water after feeling the need of it maintains the electrolytic balance in the body. However, drinking water when not thirsty damages the electrolytic balance.

Drink water slowly while sitting.

You often experience an immense urge to drink water after exercising or roaming outside in hot. Whatever is your reason to gulp water, always sit before taking that first sip and drink slowly. Drink as much as needed.

Mind the Quality of water.

Ensure that the water you are drinking is free from all types of health hazards, like dirt bacteria and chemicals. Generally, reverse osmosis water is considered as safe to drink. However, if you are living in the areas where the levels of chemicals like lead are higher in water, you must drink distilled water. Install an electric water purifier at your home to ensure the quality of water.

Don’ts
No need of haste

Drinking a large amount of water hurriedly is extremely dangerous and may lead to hyponatremia. This is a condition where electrolyte level in your body drops which can be fatal in some cases.

Never stand and drink

When you drink while you are on feet your thrust never gets quench and as a result, you start feeling thirstier and drink more water. Also, it can cause permanent damage to the following systems:

  1. Starting with joints; while you gulp water when on your feet, the fluid balance in your body get severely affected. The fluid starts accumulating in joints and leading to a painful condition of arthritis.
  2. The next damage are kidneys. A large amount of water gathers in bladders causing enormous pressure that may damage them.
  3. You may suffer from acidity and heartburn. The sphincters in your digestive system restrict the acids in the stomach. Drinking water while standing to disturb the sphincters and acids escapes in the oesophagus causing a burning sensation.

You would never have thought that a simple action like standing while drinking water may lead to so many complications.
