We’re talking about a static exercise where you keep your body straight while supporting your weight on your hands and toes.

You should do the exercise a few times a week (at least three times). Many experts claim that this exercise has the same effect as 1000 crunches.

“Less than 10 minutes of planking a few times a week flattens abdominals more effectively than a thousand crunches can“, says Geralyn Coopersmith, the global director of performance and fitness training for Nike.

The plank is superior to the crunch because it uses more muscles groups.  This exercise provides you with strength in your legs, buttocks, back, stomach, shoulders and chest. Most importantly, strengthening your core stabilizes your spine, which is good for your health.

“Do 3 repetitions of 60 seconds,” recommend the experts.

The Exercise
  1. Place your hands with elbows on the ground and feet straight. Your head should be 11 inches from the floor.
  2. Keep your legs straight. Support your body weight on your hands and toes.
  3. Tighten your abs and stay in that position for 60 seconds.
  4. Rest.
  5. Repeat the exercise 3 times. If you can, try staying in that position for more than 60 seconds.
