The Pirelli Calendar exists for 50 years and it has featured a naked Kate Moss, Joan Smalls and Lara Stones, a naked or/and topless Christy Turlington, Nadja Auermann and Naomi Campbell. This Monday, a new kind of Pirelli calendar was unveiled, one like you have never seen before. The new calendar is showcasing 12 months of women chosen for their achievement. This is the first Pirelli calendar where there’s no provocative posing and the first edition featuring, mostly, women in clothes.
The new Pirelli calendar features: Natalia Vodianova (January), Kathleen Kennedy, the producer of “Lincoln” (February), Agnes Gund (March), Serena Williams (April), Fran Lebowitz (May), Mellody Hobson (June), Ava DuVernay (July), Tavi Gevinson (August), Shirin Neshat (September), Yoko Ono (October), Patti Smith (November) and Amy Schumer (December).
“We are in the midst of a perfect storm of cultural icons and politics and Hollywood. Between the first credible woman presidential candidate, all the powerful female characters on television from ‘Supergirl’ to ‘Madam Secretary’ to ‘Scandal,’ the pressure for parity in pay, it is impossible to ignore the empowerment of women. Besides, who uses a calendar anymore? It has to stand for something else,” explains Jennifer Zimmerman, the global chief strategy officer for the McGarryBowen advertising agency.
