A little boy from Tasmania lost 75% of his sight after shining a laser pointer in his eyes. The boy started having some problems with his eyes and his parents took him to the doctor. The doctor told the parents that their child is having some serious eye problems and he called optometrist Ben Armitage to investigate this problem.

Doctor Ben Armitage checked the boy’s eyes and discovered that the boy has burned his retinas and permanently damaged his eyes. All this was caused by the laser exposure.

Armitage explained that the laser exposure caused the boy to lose 75% of his vision in each eye. The family reported that the boy didn’t experience any pain while the laser was pointed at his eyes, but the boy’s vision was affected a few seconds after.

Dr. Armitage said that the injury can’t be fixed and he probably will be partially blind for the rest of his life.

According to the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological health, a 5 mW laser could cause damage, and those “properly labeled” in the 3-5mW range have no reported cases of eye damage.
