Inappropriate Work Relations And Discrimination In The Workplace

It is no news that many people face persecution in their workplaces. This persecution ranges from abuses to insults, to partiality, snobbery, and so on. Although almost everyone has faced hostility at work, at some point or the other. The hostility may be due, for reasons such as lateness, slackness on a job, and so on. Some other times, they are undeserved. People are treated badly because of their skin color, gender, culture, origin, and other statuses. Any form of discrimination is misconduct in the workplace and can affect an individual’s esteem, relationships, and overall performance.

1. Break in communication flow

Easily, those who are oppressed at workplaces are not eager to let out their opinions known. They spend most of their times avoiding other people. Some other times, in meetings where they could make vital contributions, they fail to talk because they try to avoid criticism. This means that their potentially-valuable contributions to the company are inhibited.

2. Suppressed creativity

The Human Resource Manager of every organization does great jobs in screening and assessing the potential of people that would best promote the company. Discrimination frustrates the labor of the HRM, but more, it discourages the creativity of the victimized individual. Inappropriate work relations suppress the creativity of the company as much as it does to the person.

3. A threat to personal health and those around

Victimization causes mental torment. This becomes noticeable by stress, emotional outburst, or suppressed pain. Sometimes, discriminated people transfer aggression to others, inadvertently. They bottle up their frustrations, too, and it hurts them a big deal. Although this causes weakness in staff strength, organizations with health insurance for their staff will accrue expenses by paying bills to care for their staff’s health.

4. Weakness in staff strength

Since communication would be severed and creativity suppressed, a discriminated person contributes minimally or below optimum performance to a business enterprise. A victimized individual weakens the staff strength by performance, in any organization. However, the greater vulnerability would be the person or those who victimizes them for whatever reason. The latter is like the origin of a poison that has to be dealt with as soon as possible. 

5. Declination in the overall work performance 

Since a staff’s creativity, communication flow, and personal performance encounter friction, then a business organization also faces its impact. The output capacity of the enterprise is reduced, although when considered in a short frame, the work rate doesn’t seem to lack much. However, it does when viewed in the long-term. An enterprise works below the capacity of the staff it is equipped with and pay. That means an indirect shortage.

So, you see from all these, the evil of discrimination is not just borne by an individual. The evil is felt by those around them and the business enterprise they work with. As a result, for personal staff’s safety and overall enterprise productivity, misconduct in the workplace should be reported. Some platforms allow people to discreetly report such cases, and they should be taken seriously.
