How to Have Healthy Hair Well into Your 80s

When our hair is healthy, it looks good, and that means that we feel good as well. Conversely, if we suffer from damaged hair or hair loss, it can really knock our confidence, and that can stop us doing what we really want to in life. Both men and women may expect to suffer hair loss or a reduction of hair volume and strength as we get older, but it doesn’t have to be that way. By taking the right steps when you’re younger, you can have healthy hair well into your 80s, and here’s how easy it is to do it.

1. Use Kinder Hair Products

The regular use of shampoo and conditioners is, of course, a vital component of a healthy hair care routine, but did you realize that the wrong products could actually be harming your hair? Some hair products contain harsh chemicals which can weaken the strength of your hair and attack its follicles, so always read the label carefully, and look at reviews on the internet before choosing a hair product, whether that be a shampoo, conditioner, combined product or dye. As a guide, the more natural a product is, the better, so look for products that are certified organic and products that hydrate your scalp.

2. Follow a Hair Friendly Diet

What we eat and drink affects every aspect of our physical make up, including our hair. Drink plenty of water to keep your scalp hydrated, as dehydration can be a major cause of hair loss and weak or damaged hair. It’s also been shown that Vitamins A and C, and the mineral Iron, all provide the nutrients that our hair needs. Fruit juices are a great source of Vitamin C, and Vitamin A is found in vegetables such as spinach, sweet potatoes and carrots, whilst iron rich foods include nuts, seeds, lentils and beans. If you don’t eat enough of these products, it may be worth taking a vitamin supplement.

3. Have a Scalp Massage

We all know how great we feel after a massage, and that a professional massage can help to ease aches and pains, but a scalp massage is also a great way to promote a healthy head of hair. Using a scalp massager on yourself, or having a friend or partner do it for you helps to condition the scalp, which in turn improves its strength and elasticity. This in turn strengthens the roots of your hair as well as opening up the follicles, meaning that it’s easier for them to take on an optimal level of hydration. Added to this, of course, you’ll also feel fantastic after having a scalp massage.

4. Adopt a Less Demanding Hairstyle

We all want a hairstyle that looks great, but sometimes we forget how demanding some of our hairstyles actually are. If you want healthy hair that lasts throughout your life you should avoid bleaching it at all costs. You should also be wary of pulling your hair back too tightly on a regular basis, into a pony tail for example, as this can damage the follicles which can be the cause of hair loss later in life. If it feels painful when you pull back your hair, you’re doing it too vigorously, or creating a hairstyle that’s too tight for your own good.

Using organic hair products, having regular scalp massages, drinking lots of water, eating a healthy diet and avoiding hairstyles that pull your hair back too far can all have a huge and positive impact on your hair health. That doesn’t just mean you can have great looking hair today, it can last well into your 80s. After all, you can still look great in your golden years.
