Here’s Why You Should Eat Banana Peels

Stop throwing away the banana peels because they have many health benefits. We agree that the yellow peel doesn’t look very appetizing, but it is rich in potassium, magnesium and fibers.

Banana peel contains tryptophan, a key substance that helps the production of serotonin- a substance that prevents depression and helps us sleep better.

“Banana peel also contains dietary fibers which can help you regulate your cholesterol level. The peel of many fruits is rich in vitamins and minerals because it’s directly exposed to sunlight,” explains MD Ana Daniels from the British Specialist Nutrition Association.

Doctor Daniels explains that banana peels contain carotenoids and antioxidants that are extremely good for your overall health.

“The peel of many fruits is great source of vitamins and minerals because it is exposed to sunlight as they grow.”

Experts agree that banana peel is healthy and everyone should eat it, although it’s not that tasty. If you don’t like the taste, you can chop a whole banana with its peel into pieces, add it in boiling water for 10 minutes and drink it as a tea.

Nutritional Benefits Of Banana Peels

Banana peels contain significant percentages of your daily recommended intake of various nutrients, such as:

  • 12% of daily fiber, which helps with digestion and helps lower your risk of diabetes.
  • 17% of vitamin C, which is important for your immune system as well as growth and development.
  • 20% of vitamin B-6, which aids the body’s ability to convert food into energy.
  • 12% of potassium, which helps in development of all body cells, tissues, and organs.
  • 8% of magnesium, which increases the body’s energy and regulates glucose and blood pressure levels.

If you eat the skin along with the flesh of the banana you get an even bigger boost in these same nutrients.
