Dispelling Myths: Lip Fillers

If there’s one thing that’s common among all women, it’s the fact that we all want to stay beautiful. And well, the biggest culprit at taking our beauty away is age. Nobody wants to look old — while this is nothing more than nature running its course, there are those who simply wish to defy this inevitable process in order to preserve the beauty they currently have.

Luckily, because of advancements in medicine, we’ve been able to come up with ways in order to do just that. But as usual, our adult brains cause us to be skeptical of a lot of things, especially if we haven’t had any previous experience with a product, concept, or belief. This is because we are wired to base our perceptions on previous experience and when there isn’t any experience from which to draw an opinion or perception, then we, as adults, default to our cautious nature.

Lip fillers are some of the best you can get, but regardless, they, and other lip fillers, are still met with skepticism. And while skepticism is healthy, too much of it could spread misinformation — something that nobody benefits from. So, join me as I discuss some of the most common misconceptions about lip fillers.

1. The process is irreversible

Word for word, this statement is false. However, it’s important to note that some lip fillers take up to two years to break down, so if you’re unhappy with the results, you may have to endure them. However, more modern lip fillers like Restylane Silk react to hyaluronidase (an eraser enzyme) in a way that speeds up the breakdown process of the lip filler to almost instantaneous results.

2. Fillers are only for old people

While their primary function is to help reduce any signs of aging, they may also be used to enhance a person’s lips. Not only that, but they can also be used to slow down the aging process and prevent the formation of wrinkles.

3. Fillers never look natural

Experts say that it’s not really the filler’s fault when someone looks unnatural; rather, this mistake can be attributed to the inexperience of the performing dermatologist. It’s for this reason that clients are recommended to only undergo this procedure with a doctor that’s experienced in the field.

4. You need to get retouched often

While it’s true that there’s an apparent need for a retouch, it isn’t as often as you might think. Typically, clients need to get retouched every 6 months, but the cheek areas typically last for a year. The filler used around the mouth dissolves quicker because the mouth is used more often, whether it’s due to talking, smiling, or eating.

5. Women with round faces can’t take fillers

People believe that this is because it would make their faces look more round, bloated even. That’s not the case, as fillers can in fact target specific areas of the face. So, there’s really no cause for concern as far as face shape goes.
