7 Great Careers If You Love Horses

There are so many great careers to choose from if you are passionate about horses. Careers range from highly qualified full-time positions to occasional support staff and everything in between. Here are some fantastic options for your career if you love horses and want to work with them.

Equine Vet

An equine vet is one who specialises in horses. Horses need to be kept in tip top shape and you will never be out of work if you make this your career. The main difference between this and a standard vet is that you will mostly treat horses and you will be expected to travel to your clients. Horses are large animals and can be difficult to transport so it is you who would do the travelling.

Mounted Police

Most police forces have mounted police officers who deal with public order at large events. This is often a part of your job rather than your whole job though, and you will be expected to train as a police officer first.

Household Cavalry

Join the army as Household Cavalry soldier and you could find yourself riding your horse in some of the top ceremonies in the UK. This is a great job if you love horses and pomp and ceremony. You will be trained as a soldier first and then go on a specialist riding course to learn how to ride horses in top ceremonial occasions.

Riding Instructor

If you have a lot of patience and want to teach others to ride horses as well as you can, then a job as a riding instructor may suit you. Many stables make money by giving riding lessons and you could be part of the team. Most stables require you to obtain qualifications from the Association of British Riding Schools to become an instructor but some riding schools offer apprenticeships to help you achieve this.

Groom

Grooms look after the day-to-day needs of the horses in their care. They deal with the feeding, exercise and general grooming of the animals as well as keeping the stables clean and tidy. A good groom can work their way up to being a stable manager in time and supervise the other grooms.

Transporter

If a horse needs to be taken to the racetrack or transferred from one stable to another, they are usually driven in a horse box. To drive a horse box, you may need to obtain an operator’s licence. This depends on the size of trailer you are using to transport the horses and the purpose for which they are being transported.

Track Support Staff

Track support staff are usually only required on race days. However, they are needed in great quantities to work in hospitality, catering, security staff and handling bets for companies such as Unibet Racing. These positions are great fun, but they usually only need staff for occasional days rather than offering regular work.

These are just some of the amazing careers you can do if you want to work with horses.
