3 Different Ways to Treat Tonsil Stones at Home

Tonsil stones are small deposits of calcified debris left over from food and are found lodged tightly between the tonsils. Some people have tonsil stones and don’t even realize it until they feel something stuck in their throat, and then randomly cough it up.

However, this doesn’t happen in all cases. Tonsil stones are known for causing an array of annoying symptoms which can make everyday life that little bit more difficult and frustrating. These can include; sore throat; trouble swallowing; pain when swallowing; ear pain; and, most annoyingly, extremely bad breath.

If they’re similar causing issues for you, you’re probably wondering what you can do to treat them at home without having to go see a doctor. This is easily done and I’ve outlined three methods you can take advantage of below.

Use a Damp Cotton Swab

It’s possible to have success with removing tonsil stones with a damp cotton swab, but you’ll need to be careful.

Start by dipping the cotton swab in water and then opening your mouth while standing in front of a mirror. You’re going to need to keep your mouth open wide while gently inserting the cotton swab over to the location of the tonsil stone and gently pressing down on it to help dislodge it.

You may need to do this a few times to get the tonsil stone to budge because these stones are often quite stubborn. However the more you practice this the easier it gets.

Gargle With Lime Juice

The acidity of lime juice could work perfectly to dissolve the stones. While you may see some health benefits from adding lime juice to your water, it’ll also help you treat your tonsil stone infection.

Simply pour a tablespoon of lime juice into a cup, sip it, and then gargle with the lime juice for two minutes. The stones may not be dislodged the first time you choose to gargle with lime juice but being persistent does help.

If you gargle twice daily with your lime juice, you may be able to get rid of your tonsil stones within a week or two. Simply make sure it becomes an added part of your daily oral hygiene routine and you should see results.

Reduce Dairy Intake

Consuming too much dairy could cause more tonsil stones to develop over time. The calcium in dairy often leads to a build-up of these calcium deposits. So although dairy does have many health benefits, it’s best to avoid it if you suffer from this infection.

Remember that there are a lot of great alternatives to certain dairy products, such as almond milk, coconut milk, and even soy milk, all of which are better options when you’re trying to avoid dealing with tonsil stones.

And as well as that, supermarkets are also coming out nut-based yogurt and butter alternatives too

Final Words

In order to keep your tonsil stones away, I recommend using a combination of these three “remedies”. By working them into your daily routine you will see the best possible results and the symptoms should stop causing your problems.
