Step 1: Prepare the Surface

The very first thing you need to do is- preparing the surface for painting. Though painting with a sprayer is more fun, making the surface ready indeed takes a lot. Yes, you might need to crack, fill, dent, sand and so on to make the surface ready for painting. So, have a close look at the interior walls and check out whether they need any of these or ready to get started with painting.

Step 2: Determine the Painting Area

When you have found out that the walls are ready for painting, select the area where you need to paint. Now, mask off the things and area you do not want to paint. You can simply use old newspaper and painter’s tape to cover the area and things you do not want to be painted. You can also use canvas paint tarps to cover the floors when painting the ceiling.

Step 3: Prepare Yourself

When you are done with marking the painting area and covering the rests, it is time to prepare yourself. Make sure you have worn a hooded painter’s coveralls and goggles to protect your eyes from the chemical reaction. Do not forget to wear a respiratory mask featured with a chemical filter. Before you start painting with a spray painter, do not overlook the instruction or user manual. Go through the instructions before you proceed with painting.

Step 4: Give a Try

Before you start painting the walls, it is always a good idea to have a test spray. Not because you are a newbie in painting with a sprayer, you will get to know how it works at hand. Start with painting on cardboard or scrap plywood to make sure you are good enough to go. You will also get a chance to know how to hold the sprayer perfectly, how to control the nozzle and paint in the right way. Paint sprayers emit colors both in a vertical and horizontal pattern. You can switch the patterns by turning the tip.

Step 5: Get on the Battle Field

Now, hold the sprayer approx. 12 inches away from your painting area (check out the user manual for more precise information). Stroke the sprayer side-to-side for vertical spray pattern and up-to-down for horizontal. Start from the top positioning the tip for a vertical pattern and slowly come down stroking side-to-side. Try to cover around 3-4 feet swath at a time and start immediately after completing one swath. To avoid overlapping, start painting the second swath before the earlier one gets dry. For a smoother wall and stunning finish, paint 5-6 thin coats other than 2-3 thick coats.
