Who Plays the Lottery More? Men or Women?

Playing the lottery is one of the oldest traditions of modern society, so people have been doing this for quite some time now. Looking back, people have developed rituals around the game as well as various ways of playing it. But, observing all the patterns around the game, we began wondering who has a bigger passion for it, men or women.

According to a sociology research project conducted by Vision Critical in 2013, it seems that men have a clearly higher interest in the lottery than women do. The study revealed that 55% of men put in lottery tickets regularly, while only 42% of women have a lottery habit.

This is strictly related to the higher tendency that men have towards risk-taking. When buying a lottery ticket, the risks are minimal, but the expectations are through the roof. And men seem to be more inclined to take the leap and play for those big lottery jackpots.

Women, on the other hand, seem to analyze the numerous potential scenarios sprung by their decision to play the lottery to the core. This sometimes results in considering the game a risk too high to take, which would explain the lower proportion of female lottery players.

But this is not the only difference between men and women when it comes to the lottery. While women seem to prefer purchasing lottery tickets as per the longtime lotto tradition, men seem to enjoy playing the lottery online because it is a more accessible option.

This should come as no surprise since women tend to value keeping certain traditions alive. Like an old-fashioned shopping session will always be incomparably better than shopping online, so will purchasing lottery tickets and using the small pens to pin the numbers have a more charismatic appeal than putting in the tickets in only a few clicks.

As for men, the fact that playing the lottery online can make it more efficient and more accessible is translated into a much higher online play rate. And since buying tickets online can actually help players improve their game tactics, men seem to want to take advantage of that opportunity and hopefully get closer to those big jackpots.

However, people don’t only play the lottery to win the jackpots. This is yet another interesting finding of the Vision Critical study. While the large amounts of money are reason enough for millions of people to play, it seems that quite a few of them are in it for fun.

The excitement of finding out whether or not they have managed to think of the exact numbers that were drawn in the official draw keeps people playing week after week. With stakes as high as those in the lottery, the buildup is immense, which makes the entire experience immensely entertaining.

Playing the lottery is a longstanding tradition that is bound to remain valuable for many years now. While men seem to be more interested in the game, the number of female players remains impressive on its own.
