What to Do When Your Power Goes Out

We might have all been afraid of the dark when we were children. Going into the basement if you had one was a challenge. If the closet light burned out, you were afraid of the monsters there.

But as an adult, the darkness itself may not be scary. But having your power go out when you need to go about your evening not only makes it difficult to get around. It makes it impossible to use pretty much any amenity in the house.

Storms and other disasters happen.

In 2012, there were 94 separate power outages across New Zealand and Australia. One was caused by a hot air balloon crash. So you never know exactly what might prompt an outage.

So you never know exactly what might prompt an outage.

Be Prepared For A Power Outage

One of the best things you can do in case of a power outage is be prepared ahead of time. You will have a much harder time getting things together if the power is already out.

Map Your House

First, make a map of your house. Mark on it the exits and mark on it the where the circuit breaker is located. This will ensure that, even if you aren’t around, someone in the house can locate the box.

When the power does go out, find the breakers and turn them on and off to make sure it’s not just a breaker that got tripped.

Gather Torches

Unless you have a backup generator, you’re going to need as much light as you can. Gather all the torches you have, check the batteries, and put them in a water tight container someplace accessible and central.

You want to be able to grab a torch and use it without having to go through a battery change.

It’s also a good idea to have candles and matches on hand. Especially since batteries can go bad or get wet.

In the event of a disaster, you need to know what is happening outside your house. If you’re trapped in your house, you need a way to know when it’s safe to go outside. If it’s inclement weather, you need to know if more is coming.

Post Emergency Number About The House

It’s always a good idea to have emergency numbers around the house. If something happens when the power goes out, you want to be able to quickly call the authorities if you need help.

Also, place the number to your 24 hour electrician on your fridge or near your phone. It could be an electrical wiring problem. Call them immediately in case of an outage.

Gather Ice Packs

If it’s summer, it’s going to be hot. You most likely have stuff that will melt in the heat. Things like medications need to be kept safe from extreme temperatures. Keep instant ice packs in the house.

And also keep a cooler. You can use these things in case of an outage to keep things cool if you need it.

Conclusion:

There are many things you can do to prepare for an outage. Make sure your family and home are safe.

Be prepared. There is no other alternative.
