The Five Skincare Items You Don’t Actually Need in Your Bathroom

As women, the media tells us that we need so much skincare items. While many of us have a very complex skincare treatment that’s actually necessary, there are so many products that are just hype. We keep buying more and more skin care items, and the next thing we know, our bathroom sink vanity is crowded and things are falling and spilling over.

It just won’t do to have a vanity for your beauty needs that’s overflowing and…well, not really beautiful at all. Here’s five items that are all just hype and no result. Throw them out, or just don’t buy them altogether.

1. Exfoliating Mitts

Unless you tan and need to take uneven tans off regularly, you will never need an exfoliating mitt for your face. There are gentler substitutes you can use such as exfoliating scrubs or active face washes. Exfoliating with a mitt is too harsh and can cause immature skin peeling, redness and soreness- they were made for bodies and not faces. Just don’t do it.

2. Toner

Toners are all marketing hype. The ads say toners minimize the oils on your face and shrinks pores, but this is not always the case. They can be quite drying on sensitive skin and is simply another unnecessary expense in your skin care routine. The only time that you would truly need toner is if you have excessively oily skin. Otherwise, save yourself the money and the effort.

3. Face Sheet Masks

While they are a relatively new trend that can cost a pretty buck, most ingredients in face sheet masks don’t even get absorbed properly by your skin. They can be quite uncomfortable and cold on your face, and you can end up wasting so many dollars for every single sheet you get. It is just better to save by making your own natural face masks.

4. Thousands of Moisturisers

We all do it. We buy the newest, most hyped moisturizers, especially from big name brands, and then forget it about a month later. Picking a moisturizer (or two, for different seasons) that will always work for your skin is the best thing you can do for your skin care. Test moisturizers, find one that doesn’t leave your skin dry and doesn’t induce any reactions, and you’re set. Many skin care stores offer sample sizes.

5. Unmedicated Pimple Creams

Instead of spending plenty of time self-diagnosing and researching pimple creams online, save yourself the trouble and go to the doctor. A doctor will have a better idea of what can be prescribed to you that will have the least risk of reactions. Remember, medicated skin care will always have a higher chance of being effective. Its ingredients are simply much more active.

The key to skin care is testing, finding what works and sticking to it. Doctors can always help, as well as your personal experience. Don’t just believe word of mouth and advertising campaigns. Skincare shouldn’t be a constant shopping quest that deals heavy blows to your bank account.
