What Can Cause a Sore Throat and How You Can Soothe It

The sore throat is a very common health problem and usually there is nothing to worry about. Still, it’s very unpleasant, and needs to be treated in order to soothe the pain.

The common causes of a sore throat

The sore throat is mostly caused by minor illnesses such as colds or flu and it can be treated at home. In most of the cases, it’s a symptom of a viral or bacterial infection.

Here are the most common causes:

  • Laryngitis (inflammation of the voice box)
  • Tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils) – also accompanied by fever or discomfort when swallowing.
  • Strep throat(a bacterial throat infection) – also accompanied by swollen glands in your neck.
  • Glandular fever– also accompanied by tiredness.
  • Throat irritation and allergies

  • Drink plenty of cool or warm fluids, and avoid very hot drinks.
  • Eat soft foods and plenty of soup.
  • Avoid smoking and sitting in smoky areas.

When to get emergency help

In some cases, a sore throat can be a sign of a serious problem. Although, it’s very rare; call an emergency if you notice some of these symptoms:

  • Symptoms are getting severe or worse very quickly
  • If you start breathing difficulty
  • If you’re making a high-pitched sound as you breathe (called stridor)
  • If you have difficulty swallowing
